2016 vegetables: starting today

It's true: we finally started planting things from our best-laid plans from the coldest day of 2016. The sun was out, not a cloud in the sky, and comfortable enough to work outside in a short-sleeve shirt. Hooray! I also cut the lawn for this first time in 2016 this weekend!

We cleaned up the square foot beds, replaced the old divider strings, and turned over the soil. In the west bed, we even planted a square each of kale, carrots, and lettuce. The worst thing that could happen is they get nipped by frost...

Inside, we set up a grow light and plant starting mat, and reused containers from last year's plant purchases. I'm excited to see if the tomato seeds I saved last year will work! Fingers crossed!

We have 18 plants being started, including 8 tomato plants, dianthus, basil, and rosemary. The rosemary is in the lower right corner, covered with plastic wrap.

Earlier today, I stopped at Menards to pick up materials for a third square foot box (this one is for tomatoes). 11% off this week! (In the form of a rebate check usable only at Menards.) Later this week (or next weekend), we'll stir together the soil mixture (compost, vermiculite, peat moss).

Rhubarb is doing VERY well!

Looks great!
