As Ms. K. pointed out in the previous (and very colorful) post, the cold weather has us nearly trapped inside. Somehow, I managed to stay inside all day on Saturday. (Is that good or bad?) This morning, my car wouldn't start. Ugh. It's cold:
Ms. K. and I were both dreaming of warmer weather, thinking of dinners from the garden and sitting on the patio. See exhibit A:
Exhibit A: Summer in Wisconsin |
After ordering new seeds, we took inventory of the old ones and made a planting plan for everything we hope to grow in square-foot beds. We culled a few varieties that did not work well for us (looking squarely at you, mesclun). Dreaming hopefully, we came up with this new plan for the coming season. Building on what we learned last year, some of the more sprawling plants (tomatoes and squash) will be planted in the ground or in a separate square-foot bed to let the smaller plants grow without threat of getting shaded out. There's a lot of lettuce in the plan next year, and the general idea is to schedule planting to keep our salad bowls filled all summer long.
A preview of coming attractions: yet another square-foot bed, to be dedicated to tomatoes. I love projects...
