Painting doors

We are getting new floors in the master bedroom! Mr. H. liked the pre-finished hardwood flooring we put in the craft room so much that he proposed we spruce up our room with the same floor!

But first, we must:
  • rip up the carpet and tack strips
  • prep and paint the baseboard
  • prep and paint the wood trim around the doors and closet
  • prep and paint the closet doors and room door
This weekend, we prepped and painted the closet doors and the door to the room as well as the cabinet doors and closet doors from the craft room. We'd been waiting for the perfect weekend for, oh, about 4 months. (What makes a perfect weekend: no rain, low humidity, not too warm/cold, Ms. K. doesn't have to work, no other pressing projects.)

We spent Saturday removing the doors, sanding, wiping down, priming, and painting a first coat (on both sides of each door). Today (Sunday) we carefully painted coat #2 and were done by noon. The doors practically baked dry in the blazing sun so that we were able to pull them inside before the rain started around 3 pm. Not a bad weekend of work!

The carpet upstairs is about 30 years old and dates from a major remodel in 1989, when the space was first finished and made ready for human habitation. Every time we vacuum, I think more carpet fibers are sucked up into the old Dyson than dirt. Eventually, we will replace the carpet in the hall, the reading nook, and the stairs. (We've already pulled it out of the craft room and the office.)

The woodwork we painted is really nothing special - pine with a yellowed finish. We used Alabaster (7008) from Sherwin-Williams in a semigloss. Alabaster has become the standard white paint in this house - we used it in the kitchen, craft room, and when we repainted the bedroom walls a few years ago. With the doors back in place this afternoon, we have a little taste of what the room will look like once all of the yellow pine is covered with white paint and...we can't wait for the end result!

Anyway, we are very much looking forward to painting the trim during the week so we can work on the floor next weekend!

Outside painting stations!

  1. You are very ambitious! The doors look beautiful! I'm sure the floors are a great improvement from the old carpet. Great that you've had some nice weather to work, too!

  2. Oh my goodness! So many surfaces! I love how you do all of this in one go-- so efficient. What were the doors like before?
