Taking chances

It was approaching the middle of June, and while at Menards, found about the only seeds still in stock were for radishes and beets. We have one square of beets. We wanted some radishes!

Unfortunately, we did not plan ahead for them early in the season, planting them in May when we should have to get an early crop. I took a chance and planted a square. They germinated!

As the season has gone on, some of the spinach has bolted. We need to pull these out, replant, and hope for a second crop in this square:

We have an abundance of lettuce, thankfully!

Also making progress in the "big plant" box. Tomatoes, kale, zucchini, and romanesco are all doing very well over here. We gave the zucchini four squares this year, and dedicated four squares to produce five heads of romanesco. The romanesco will be worth it this year!

The tomatoes do require daily care. We are growing them using a single-vine method, which means I get to take a trip to the backyard, pinching off leaves at the leaf nodes to prevent additional vines from being produced. Hopefully this new approach works. So far, so good!

  1. The tomatoes look great! We already have some flowers and some teeny tiny fruits. I like the single-vine method so far. Very tidy!
