Summer experiment

My latest round of weeding was more annoying than usual, which is really saying something because I hate weeding. I found myself flailing arms and hands about, looking like a fool at 8 o’clock in the morning. Too many bugs, even so early! I decided it was time to start a summer experiment.

I picked up Naturally Bug-Free in Eugene, Oregon earlier this year. After a trip today to the local co-op for supplies, I have my first batch of Bye, Bye, Buzzy Spray (p. 84) ready for use! My mom has been making her own repellent for years with vodka and essential oils—I’ve done it, too—and this book expands on what we’ve tried before.

This recipe uses rosemary, lemongrass, and peppermint essential oils; witch hazel; vegetable glycerin; and Dr. Bronner’s peppermint castile soap. Can’t wait for a test run!
