Starting to make cabinets...

We finally got started on the new island cabinet! The materials for the face frames for one side are now completed! I spent the afternoon in the basement using most of the stationary tools we have (table saw, jointer, and planer) to prepare materials. I used poplar, since it's what I had in the shop.

A view of where the action happens:

After a few hours of planing, jointing, and sawing, the lumber to build the face frame for one side of the new cabinet is done. Hooray. All that work for this?

In the island, we'll have four drawers, a pull-out trash can, and a lift for the KitchenAid stand mixer. Laid out on the bench, the face frame looks like this:

Being a bit lazy, I opted to use biscuits to hold the face frame together. Alas.

Remember kids, measure twice, cut once. I measured once and cut four times. Oops. Good thing this will be hidden by the countertop or not visible because it will face the floor and be in the toe kick area.

The glue-up comes together, at long last!

Not shown, the plywood for the case construction is partly cut. It was getting late and it was time to call it a night (breaking down plywood in the dark isn't a good idea).

As a bonus, I upgraded from a construction-style DeWalt miter saw stand to a more appropriate bench. Eventually, the bay at the far left will have drawers for tool or hardware storage. The center, to contain a vacuum to collect sawdust from the saw.
