Preserving tomato seeds

By far, the star of the tomato plants has been the Black Krim, an old heirloom variety. Not knowing our ability to find it in the future, we opted to save seeds from it (along with a Brandywine and Costoluto Genovese).

This is an experiment (much like the rest of our gardening this year). Following the instructions from a group of master gardeners here, we scraped seeds and gel from some of the old-variety tomatoes that we were prepping for preservation in the freezer today.

Ms. K took a picture while I was prepping Black Krim for an arctic blast in the deep-freeze. Eventually, all three jars below were filled with seeds. They're now tucked away in a dark cupboard to ferment until Thursday. Hopefully our work pays off and we can enjoy more Black Krim in our future gardens.

On the agenda for a future day: figure out how to start tomatoes indoors effectively.
