Paving stone delivery

We dedicated Saturday to be the "build the patio" day. Friday's plans to do some of the prep work were cancelled as we ran out of landscaping fabric and had to go to the building center to get more. Regardless, the two of us were still pretty sore from moving two tons of sand on Thursday night, so having a rest from a night of major work was nice. Ms. K got to enjoy the patio furniture section at Menards while I was finding the materials we needed to keep the project (and another one) on task. (For whatever reason, going to Menards sucks the life out of Ms. K. Usually after a short time in the store, she'll abandon me and make her way to the patio furniture section to rest on the most plush offerings in the department)

Our delivery of patio stones was originally scheduled for Friday. In the late afternoon, the scheduler from the quarry called and said the driver wouldn't make it because of mechanical issues and that the delivery would have to be rescheduled. After a short negotiation, I was able to ensure we would have a delivery on Saturday so we could complete our project this weekend.

The driver showed up this morning at 7:00AM. I missed the call from him on Friday night telling us when he was planning on making the delivery. Bright and early, and unexpected!

Much like the driver who brought the sand, his forklift was also too wide to fit up our narrow driveway without running over plants adjacent to our house and the neighbors house. We had him deposit the pallets on the front lawn. As luck would have it, he dropped the pallets on the freshly-moved soil with new grass seeds planted. Oh well.

Two pallets of stones, in total 2.5 tons (or 5000 lb, if you're keeping track), showed up on our front lawn this morning

Hello, Lannon stone!

Time to get to work and build this patio. There's much to do -- finishing installing landscape fabric, moving sand, tamping, leveling, resting, etc.

  1. The absolute worst fight P and I ever had was in the parking lot of the Menards in SW Madison. Along with sucking life, it also sucks patience, listening skills, and humility.

What's two and a half tons to a hardy grass seed, anyway? What kind of flagstone is it?

  2. I really like all of the promise Menards holds for house projects but once I get into the store, my energy is entirely depleted within 10 minutes. I got mad at Nate once because he zoomed around in the store and lost me almost right away. So now, instead of getting mad (and slowing Nate down!), we agreed that I am to wait it out in patio furniture. Sometimes I grab a book from the display shelves.

It's Lannon stone, so mostly lighter colors with some yellow thrown in once in a while - nothing blue or gray. Bonus: it comes from a quarry about 15 miles from home!
