Staking the peonies

Last year, I staked the peonies using a method called the Hildene Star. For our older peony plants that get so tall, it worked much more effectively than the typical round, two-tiered metal hoop.

The gardeners at Hildene, Robert Todd Lincoln's summer home in Vermont, pioneered the method and it still carries that legacy name.

My mistake last year was using stakes that were too short. Mr. H. made sure I was well provisioned with longer stakes for 2021! Some wrappings of jute twine make the star shape.
