Amateur tip: when you want a reasonably strong joint but you don't want to set up machinery, use your circular saw to cut a series of kerfs, then chisel out the waste. Without a lot of complicated setup, you can achieve a strong joint that is less susceptible to racking.

I made this from salvaged material. Lumber prices are a little steep right now for a project like this. Nothing like shopping in your own scrap bin.
