Fennel grows on top of the soil, did you know that? I didn't, not before this year! Our fennel bulbs were each anchored by a huge root that I had to cut through with a knife when it was time to harvest this week.

We cut these in half (frond to root) and braised them, following the instructions of Abra Berens in her wonderful new cookbook Ruffage (2019, Chronicle Books). Delicious!
