A prelude to kitchen madness

We almost didn't look at the house because of the kitchen. Filled with 1980s country charm, it wasn't really in keeping with the character of the rest of the house or our style.

View from northwest. Awkward counter added to make kitchen "eat in"

View from southwest. Acres of honey oak and blue laminate. Someone followed the suggestion "maybe some track lighting would help."

Best parts: corded phone with super long cord and a ceiling fixture more in keeping with an Applebee's.

Ms. K and I had long contemplated what to do about the kitchen. The blue had to go, as did the tile floor. Not to mention the long-term build-up of cooking grease in the sand-textured walls. Note to remodelers: do not apply sand texture in kitchens.

At the encouragement of good friends, we opted to "figure out" what was under our tile floors in the lowest risk method possible. We broke out a single tile located under the refrigerator, in case we found something awful, so we wouldn't have to face looking at destruction in perpetuity. With hammer and chisel in hand, we set out to figure this out.

After short work, we quickly learned the tile was attached to lauan and not in a bed of mastic directly on the subfloor. Hooray!

Now to find the time to get started on the project...
