Goodnight, garden

Milwaukee had its first snow of the season starting last night. I drove home from the airport at about 10:30 through a light snowfall, and this morning, we woke up to find around 4" of white stuff on the ground.

Just a week ago, we were able to work outside in a sweatshirt, rake leaves, and harvest the last of the rhubarb. Fast forward to today:

The Parakeet-colored wall brings a much-needed bright spot to the back yard.

The kale finally bit the dust, and if it's still hanging on, will be done tonight. The forecast for our area is 16 degrees -- the coldest temperature of the new winter season.

Goodnight,  garden. We'll wake you in the spring.

(On the positive side, the fresh snow makes everything outside brighter, even though this first snow is a harbinger of things to come. I'll insist on considering the positives -- everything could be much worse. We could have had a blizzard for the first snow. It could have wrecked our morning commutes. But, instead, we were able to keep the cars parked and enjoy a relaxing Saturday at home. Homework, basement tidying, and various degrees of cooking projects rounded out our day.)
