Last night, we had the first hard freeze of the year. No "frost while being above freezing" here in Milwaukee this year, straight to a killing freeze. It was 29 degrees this morning. I wanted gloves when I took Lucy for a stroll this morning!
With much sadness, I must report that, aside from kale and chard, the garden is done for the year. It was a good one, with many delicious meals prepared after shopping in our backyard produce department.
I spent the afternoon cleaning out the square foot beds, removing tomato and pepper plants, tomato cages, containers, and anything else that wasn't going to survive the colder weather. We're down to two kale plants and a few Swiss chard that have hung on:
It's been a great year to garden. If the house projects weren't competing for our time, we would have done a better job keeping up with the garden! There's always next year. We learned a lot and are thrilled to have such a good foundation for next year's gardening!

This afternoon, after Mr. H. took these photos, I trimmed the morning glory vines and pulled them out of the tree. I should have done it a few weeks ago but didn't have time when it was light out.
